With a flap of its bat-like wings, a dragon soars high into the air. It lifts its head and breathes out a stream of scorching fire.
You’ve probably come across this fearsome monster in movies or books. Maybe you’ve even battled one in a video game. The dragon is one of the most popular mythical creatures of all time. But where did the idea of this intimidating beast come from?

Statues of dragons can be found around the world. This one guards a temple in China!
Today we know that dragons don’t exist. But in ancient times, people all over the world believed they did. In China, dragons were sometimes described as spine-chilling creatures that lived in the ocean. In Egypt, stories were told about a petrifying monster that caused earthquakes. In Europe, tales of fire-breathing dragons made people break out in a cold sweat.
So why do so many cultures have stories about dragons? Some of these stories probably spread after people found the bones of long-gone animals, like dinosaurs. At the time, it wasn’t known that dinosaurs once roamed the earth. When people found their enormous skeletons, they believed the bones belonged to a bloodcurdling monster, like a dragon.
Some dragon stories also likely came from people trying to explain things they didn’t understand—like earthquakes. Not knowing what caused these frightful natural events, people imagined that a giant creature was shaking the planet.

Dreamed Up
Some experts think dragons took over our imagination for another reason. For thousands of years, humans had to watch out for predators that could attack them, like snakes and tigers. Perhaps this dread of dangerous animals got stuck in our ancestors’ brains. And eventually, people imagined one hair-raising creature that combined many of those predators’ features—and more! (No real animal can breathe fire.)
No matter how dragons were dreamed up, we know one thing for sure: Many people love dragon stories. Do you?
